I had the most fun in story mode, which tells the story of the Three Kingdoms in the manner of a particularly melodramatic soap opera. The appearance of 'boss' characters and objectives that can change suddenly-like rushing to the defence of an overwhelmed ally-try their best to break up the slog, but there isn't really that much to do.
Battles can go on for as long as an hour, with the 'KO' counter at the bottom-right of the screen ticking up into the thousands. Your limited pool of abilities and moves is stretched far too thin. It's basically an elaborate game of rock, paper, scissors.īut one criticism of Dynasty Warriors I think is entirely justified is how repetitive it is. If you're facing an opponent with an affinity that clashes with your own, you'll be at a disadvantage and find it difficult to break their guard, but switch weapons mid-fight to a stronger affinity and you'll be able to strike them with a flurry of unstoppable attacks. It’s tough to have to pick between sharp visuals or consistent performance, but when it comes to this kind of game, performance is key, and they nailed it with this port.Your weapons have one of three affinities-Heaven, Earth, or Man-and so do enemies. They aren’t pretty changes at all, but they’re changes that helped ensure the gameplay was unchanged and remains as smooth as ever.
It’s almost impossible to land your eyes on that text long enough to read them, so being able to hear and understand the characters suddenly adds some much-needed narrative oomph to the missions that I really appreciate.ĭynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition had to go through a lot of visual changes to be able to find a home on the Nintendo Switch. My biggest complaint about Warriors-style games for years has been the fact that characters converse and story moments happen through small text bubbles in the middle of gameplay. Something that makes me incredibly happy about this Warriors game is the full English dub it received, which was left intact for the Nintendo Switch version.
